Weird! I never had any problem connecting up to WiFi at a number of different Panera in Illinois and Iowa. But we have iPhones and iPads. I see lots of other people using laptops also using the Wifi. Did you ever ask one of them what they had to do? Is it only at Panera restaurants that you have this problem? Also you can ask gemini.google.com - make certain you select the "thinking" mode.
Gene - I think there must be something different about Chromebook that makes it more difficult to be detected by the Panera captive portal. Windows, Mac, Android phones, iPhones all connect without issues.
